As a therapist  and a monther I ca atest pregnancy is a beautiful yet intense journey—your body is constantly changing, and the emotional shifts can be overwhelming. That’s why I offer prenatal WATSU®: to help you feel weightless, supported, and deeply connected to your baby. Let me walk you through why this practice is so powerful, not just from experience, but also from a scientific perspective.

What is Prenatal WATSU®?

Prenatal WATSU® is a gentle, nurturing form of aquatic therapy that involves floating in warm water while I support and move your body in rhythmic, flowing movements. It blends elements of shiatsu massage, stretching, and deep relaxation, all while leveraging the buoyancy of water to relieve pressure and enhance mobility. It’s not just a massage—it’s an immersive, deeply personal experience that helps you feel held, both physically and emotionally.

The Science Behind the Benefits of Prenatal WATSU®

  1. Relieves Physical Discomfort

Pregnancy shifts your center of gravity, increases strain on your back, and places added pressure on your joints. In warm water, the principles of hydrostatic pressure and buoyancy take effect. Buoyancy reduces the weight your body carries, easing the load on your spine, joints, and ligaments, while hydrostatic pressure helps reduce muscle tension and improves blood circulation. The warmth of the water also increases blood flow to your muscles, helping them relax and reducing pain.

  2. Enhances Circulation and Reduces Swelling

Swelling, or edema, is common in pregnancy because your body is retaining extra fluid to support the growing baby. The gentle compression from the water improves venous return—this means your blood circulates more efficiently, helping to reduce swelling in your legs, feet, and hands. At the same time, the movement of WATSU® stimulates the lymphatic system, which is responsible for removing excess fluid and waste from your body.

  3. Promotes Deep Relaxation and Stress Reduction

Stress and anxiety can be heightened during pregnancy due to hormonal fluctuations. WATSU® encourages a parasympathetic nervous system response—this is the “rest and digest” mode, the opposite of the fight-or-flight response. When your body enters this state, cortisol (the stress hormone) decreases, and oxytocin (the love and bonding hormone) increases. This shift not only relaxes you but also fosters a calm and nurturing environment for your baby.

  4. Improves Sleep Quality

Many pregnant women struggle with sleep due to discomfort and hormonal changes. WATSU® improves sleep by lowering cortisol levels and promoting melatonin production, which regulates your sleep-wake cycle. The deep relaxation from being in warm water also reduces muscle tension, allowing your body to rest more comfortably at night.

  5. Enhances Bonding with Baby

The soothing movements of WATSU® mimic the gentle rocking motion your baby experiences in the womb. When you are in a deeply relaxed state, your brain produces more oxytocin, enhancing feelings of love and connection. This is the same hormone released during breastfeeding and skin-to-skin contact after birth. Many mothers tell me they feel an incredible sense of closeness with their baby after a session.

  6. Supports Pelvic Mobility and Prepares for Birth

As your body prepares for birth, your pelvis needs to remain flexible and open. WATSU® helps by gently stretching and mobilizing the pelvis and surrounding muscles, which can ease tension and create more space for your baby. Water resistance also allows for movements that might be difficult or uncomfortable on land, making it an excellent way to prepare your body for labor.
